Divisional ICS Training : Nearly 50 Officers, soldiers and staff convened at The Salvation Army's camp in Luly to receive Incident Command System (ICS) training for disaster response. Under the leadership of Brian Kervin, Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) director for the Florida Division of the US, participants received an introduction to the system and its components, were able to put that information to use during a simulation exercise and go more in depth about emotional and spiritual care as it relates to disasters in particular, self care and the international response community. It was two days full of information and participants left energized to share. This is another component of the Haiti division's emerging EDS program.

Local Maintenance Coordinator Training : The School Repair & Reconstruction Project (CP0180) team provided practical training for local maintenance coordinators for 4 days in l'Azile, covering small and large repairs including painting, roofing, masonry and other areas. The team trained by the CP0180 Project Manager (David White) and Assistant Project Manager (Raymond Cedoine) were even able to teach workshops! Participants left having learned a lot, repaired a Salvation Army school and empowered to oversee the upkeep of schools and buildings in their area. Major Daniel Maegli, divisional property secretary, also took part in the training.

Parenting School Facilitator Training : Our child & adolescent support program staff is preparing to kick off a supplementary component called Parenting School. This component aims to support what children learn as part of this project and facilitate positive growth within homes in the communities the project serves. Two groups of corps officers (pastors) and leaders from each site were given preliminary training in two sessions. At these sessions, participants learned about adult education, the role of parents and needs of children, managing emotions, positive communication, discipline, how to address problems and how to help children develop autonomy and responsibility. All of this was done under the premise of three guiding principles of parenting school: to love, to protect and to help to grow. There are plans to implement these 6 sessions of parenting school at each of the sites of the child & adolescent support project in addition the the Salvation Army's College Verena school in Port-au-Prince and hopes to find the means to expand the program to include additional subjects throughout the entire division.

Santo 8 Warehouse Dedication : The Salvation Army Haiti's new warehouse was dedicated in the presence of officers, employees and friends on Feb. 6, 2013. It's part of a larger effort to provide much-needed disaster response and logistics training to the Haiti division. This 500 square meter space will no doubt be an asset and help equip the Army to respond to needs across the country. International guests including Colonel Onal Castor, Territorial Commander for the Caribbean, Commissioner Torben Eliasen, International Secretary for the Americas and Captain Elizabeth Nelson, International Secretary for Projects were present for the celebration. Lieutenant Colonel Joan Canning, director of the Salvation Army World Services Office (SAWSO) was on hand to give words of encouragement from the donor for the project as well. The Salvation Army Haiti is thankful to SAWSO and those who gave via SAWSO for their financial support of this project.

Vocational Training Kick-Off : The Integrated Family Support project kicked off the first round of its formal vocational training component in early December 2012. Some 108 beneficiaries were present for the official launch and heard words of support and encouragement from HRD staff, project staff, divisional leadership and local officers. They will receive 9 months of training in their choice of home construction, plumbing, ceramic work, auto mechanics or electricity at one of the country's premier vocational training schools.

2012 Kettle Kick-Off : The Salvation Army Haiti kicked off it's annual Marmites de Noel (Christmas Kettle) campaign on Friday, November 30. The campaign will run through December 24. General Bond 2012 : General Linda Bond, international leader of The Salvation Army, will travel to Jamaica to celebrate the 125th anniversary of The Salvation Army in the Caribbean this November. As part of her trip, she will visit the Haiti Division to speak with officers and see the work the strides that are being made through the HRD Office since the earthquake and the work of the division that continues its more than 60-year tradition of serving Haiti through schools, churches, health programs, a children's home and various other projects. Delmas 2 Construction 2012 : Haitian firm ARCOTEC has begun construction at the Delmas 2 compound. After more than one year of work on plans for the new buildings, and programs they contain, The Salvation Army is excited for them to become a reality. The new buildings will be both hurricane and earthquake resistant, and will have space to provide more direct services to the Delmas 2/St. Martin community. Youth Field Days : In August 2012, our Child & Adolescent Support Program hosted its first field days for young people from four of the 8 program sites in the Port-au-Prince metro area (Carrefour, Petite Place Cazeau, Lafferonnay and Balan). The days - one for children and one for adolescents - combined the programmatic thrusts of education, social and creative into one fun day and gave participants the chance to meet their peers from other locations.

Project Istwa Jacmel : The Salvation Army Haiti partnered with New York based nonprofit Project Istwa to welcome 17 children ages 10-14 for one week of photovoice workshops in Jacmel. Children were taught about digital photography and photo composition and discussed how images can convey different messages. They were able to document their lives for a day and share the istwa (Haitian Creole for "story") of each of their favorite photos and display them in an exhibit for friends, family and community at the end of the week. Thanks to Project Istwa for allowing The Salvation Army Haiti to facilitate this project and to Hotel Florita (Jacmel) for lending a space to the beautiful stories and photos of these kids for the exhibit. Delmas 2 Planning : The Delmas 2 compound has marked the presence of The Salvation Army in Port-au-prince for 60 years. The fate of the structures on both sides of the compound has been a critical issue following the 2010 earthquake that damaged the buildings beyond repair. Significant planning is going into determining how to best reconstruct the compound to serve the community. Couyot Latrines : The rural mountain town of Couyot has received 20 new latrines (as of May 2012) to help promote better sanitation and fight against the spread of cholera. A community latrine has been built at The Salvation Army's health center (the only health center in the area) and individual family latrines have been built in other areas. Rural communities are particularly vulnerable because health care can be scarce and is often only accessible after a few hour's walk which can mean the difference between life and death for some cholera patients.

Delmas 2 Ground Breaking : Friends and members of The Salvation Army Haiti gathered on March 25, 2012 to break ground for the construction of the new complex in the Delmas 2 neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. International Salvation Army guests were joined by local government and partner representatives to celebrate both the history and the future of The Salvation Army in Haiti and specifically in Port-au-Prince. The new complex will include a church to seat 3,000 people, new kindergarten, primary and secondary school buildings for College Verena, a new clinic building and a social services building.

Mobile Clinic : As part of its longstanding commitment to the Delmas 2 community, The Salvation Army's Port-au-Prince clinic, in cooperation with the HRD Office, provides health services to camp residents free of charge during mobile clinics. According to Dr. Danielle Prosper, clinic administrator, "A lot of families in the camp don’t have access to medical care outside of the times when we provide the mobile clinic. Group 1: School Repair & Construction : Photos from the first group of schools in the School Repair and Construction Project. Six schools that were affected by the 2010 earthquake have been repaired and renovated, providing safe structures for nearly 700 school children this year. Among the repairs were masonry work, roofing and framing, water catchment system installation and repair, electric wiring, security walls, water drainage and painting. Schools were in the towns of Abraham, Bellegarde, Campeche, Dessources, Lafferonnay and Petit Goave; all in southern Haiti. This project addresses needs outside of the Port-au-Prince area.

The Salvation Army Haiti : A film team from Swiss news organization NZZ (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) visited The Salvation Army, Haiti to film part of a 50-minute documentary they will be doing on the Army. They had a chance to see the traditional work of the Army in Haiti (churches, schools, clinic, hospital, children's home, etc.) in addition to post-earthquake development projects. The documentary will air in Switzerland, Germany and Austria later this year. Alice Maeder Art Project : Alice Maeder of Switzerland came to Haiti for two months to work with children through The Salvation Army. She visited Army facilities in Port-au-prince, Balan and Fond-des-Negres over two months, working with kids of all ages on art projects. Her time in Haiti culminated with a showing of the artwork that now decorates the walls of one of the temporary school buildings for College Verena on the Delmas 2 compound in Port-au-prince.

Miss Kansas & Numana : 24 year-old Carissa Kelley, Miss Kansas 2011, joined by her chaperones and Numana representatives including Founder and CEO Rick McNary, visited The Salvation Army Haiti in September. As part of Carissa's platform, she has joined with Numana in the fight against hunger and visited The Salvation Army's school in the rural community of Balan where the children were having Numana for lunch. Major Hafeli Visit : Swiss officer, Major Rosemarie Häfeli, visited Haiti in August 2011, for the first time since the earthquake. "It is overwhelming for me to see the progress in The Salvation Army," she says. "It's really something." Major Häfeli was appointed to Haiti 42 years ago as a nurse in Fond-des-Nègres and began 31 years of work building some 40 schools throughout the country. She also began The Salvation Army Haiti's relationship with Kindernothilfe (KNH) who has sponsored many projects over the years and continues to sponsor College Verena.

School visits March 2011 : Salvation Army sponsors, HRD staff and an independent evaluator traveled to 12 Salvation Army schools in the south of Haiti over the course of two weeks. They took time to speak with children and teachers, host a seminar to equip administrators and directors with tools to improve schools, and provide recommendations for moving forward. Many of these schools are in remote villages and often, children and teachers have to travel quite a distance by foot to get to work and school each day.

New DHQ : The Salvation Army, Haiti Divisional Headquarters has relocated to the Santo neighborhood. The new facility will allow for expansion in the coming years, including a conference center that will generate income for the division. Colonels William and Sue Harfoot, Chief Secretary and Secretary for Women's Ministries from the USA West, and Lt. Colonels Sydney and Trypheme McKenzie, Caribbean Territorial Secretary for Personnel and League of Mercy Secretary, were present for the April 2 dedication. The USA Western Territory sponsored the purchase of the new headquarters that Colonel Harfoot challenged officers and staff to make more than just a headquarters but, "a house where holiness is the hallmark."

US Central Territory Mission Team February 2011 : A team of men from the United States Central Territory came together to help rebuild lives in Jacmel - a town to the South of Port-au-Prince that was affected by the 2010 earthquake. These men helped to transform three transitional shelters into temporary-to-permanent shelters. This included replacing tarp sides with plywood, replacing wood flooring with a cement slab and framing and installing windows and doors. They didn't stop there. They also renovated the corps building in a similar fashion; adding plywood sides, a wooden cross behind the podium, electricity, fans, windows and new flooring. We are thankful for all of their hard work!

Child & Adolescent Support Program : The child and adolescent support program aims to improve the emotional health of young people affected by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti by engaging them in learning, play and socialization. The program targets young people ages 7-16 who have experienced a loss in relation with the 2010 earthquake. Major Christine Volet and her team begin by meeting with the community to gauge interest and need for the program and meeting with the corps officers and youth committee members to gather support for the program. Children are then interviewed and the team meets with their parents or guardians to explain the program, their role in the process and the partnership between The Salvation Army and each of them over the course of the program. After parents or guardians have registered the children, trained field workers come in to conduct the program and help young people in these communities work through their trauma.

KNH Visit before construction : Dr. Jurgen Thiesbonenkamp, Chair of the Kindernothilfe (KNH) Board of Directors, visited College Verena at Delmas 2 prior to the start of construction for the new school. At the end of his visit, the construction contract was signed between KNH who is funding the construction, Habiterra who will build the schools and The Salvation Army. KNH will celebrate 30 years of partnership with The Salvation Army Haiti in April 2011.

Fond de Negres Cholera Treatment Center : The Salvation Army, Haiti has been actively taking steps to prevent the spread of Cholera since the epidemic began. Vital supplies including soap, disinfectant, oral rehydration packets and antibiotics have been distributed via community centers (schools and churches) throughout the country. In Port-au-prince, efforts have continued through the primary health clinic, College Verena primary and secondary school and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp next to The Salvation Army's compound.
